Common Water Heater Noises & How to Fix Them

If you are hearing strange noises coming from your water heater, it could indicate that you have a problem that needs to be addressed. Below are some of the most common sounds and what each one means, as well as how it should be addressed.

Rumbling

Most people hear a rumbling in their water heater when the temperature is increasing because the water is expanding and crashing through sediment. The more sediment collects, the louder this sound will get and must be addressed immediately. The best way to handle this is to flush the drain by using a deliming solution or vinegar.

Ticking

Typically, a ticking sound indicates an issue with the water pressure. Most systems use water inlet/outlet nipples with heat traps. The nipple links the plumbing to the unit, improving the efficiency of the water heater. The best way to stop the ticking noise is by having the nipples replaced with a non-heat trap. You may also want to consider slightly reducing the temperature of your water heater. This prevents the pipes from excessively expanding, minimizing the ticking sound.

Popping

Popping sounds coming from your water heater is usually an indication that you have limescale (calcium and magnesium) buildup in your system. While these minerals are necessary for our overall health, they can be detrimental to your water heater. As the water is heated, the minerals divide- which forms limescale. Additionally, the loose sediment forms steam bubbles, which pop as the water warms up. The technicians at Ward Plumbing, Heating, and Air can clean and repair your water heater to stop the popping.

Screeching

Screeching/screaming noises primarily occur when water is trying to get through a small opening. If you are hearing these noises coming from your water heater, you may have an issue with certain valves in the system.

T&P Relief Valve

This safety valve releases pressure and reduces temperature in your system if it gets too high. If you believe this is what is causing your problem, turn off the water heater and schedule your appointment with one of our highly trained technicians.

Inlet Valve

Your inlet valve should be completely opened. If it is only slightly opened, it can prevent water flow, which can cause a screeching sound. Make sure this valve is completely opened.

Sizzling

Typically, a sizzling sound indicates a condensation issue. As the water warms in the tank, condensation forms. This condensation may leak onto the burner, which causes the sizzle. The best way to address this is to schedule an inspection of your water heater system.

Repair or Replace Calculator

Calculator for the $5,000 rule

The $5,000 rule is an industry accepted rule for determining whether to repair or replace an HVAC system. Multiply the age of your equipment by its estimated repair cost. If the outcome is under $5,000, you should probably repair. If over $5,000, you should replace.
