Signs You Need To Replace Your Air Conditioner
Replacing your air conditioner is a big step for your home, and many homeowners wonder when is the right time to replace rather than repair. While repairing is typically the cheaper upfront option, it is not always the most cost effective in the long run. Consider the following factors when deciding whether to repair or replace your air conditioner.
- Age: Most air conditioners last between 15 and 20 years. If your air conditioner is nearing the end of its life, it is time to start thinking about replacement before the system breaks down.
- Frequent Repairs: As your air conditioner ages, it requires frequent repairs. Eventually, the cost of repeated repairs overcomes the cost of a newer model.
- Reduced Efficiency: There are several signs your air conditioner isn’t as efficient as intended, such as high utility bills, decreased airflow, and uneven cooling.
The Benefits Of Replacing Your Air Conditioner
While replacing your air conditioner can be costly upfront, the replacement as a whole can provide several benefits for you and your home. Below are a few advantages of replacing your air conditioner in Sylva, NC.
- Improved Efficiency
- Better Air Quality
- Improved Lifespan
- Less Frequent Repairs
Improved Efficiency
With better technology, newer models of air conditioners have better energy efficiency features than older models. When you factor in the decreasing efficiency of your aging unit, you’ll notice a considerable difference. With higher efficiency comes lower utility bills!
Better Air Quality
A new air conditioner improves the air quality in your home or business. If you have severe allergies or are sensitive to heat, a new air conditioner can keep you comfortable and healthy much better than your old one.
Improved Lifespan
You can rest easy knowing you won’t have to replace your AC unit for another 15 years. If your current air conditioner is old, you might want to replace it just for peace of mind.
Less Frequent Repairs
As your unit ages, AC repairs become more frequent and most costly. Air conditioning replacement reduces inconvenient and costly repairs each summer.

Repair or Replace Calculator
Calculator for the $5,000 rule
The $5,000 rule is an industry accepted rule for determining whether to repair or replace an HVAC system. Multiply the age of your equipment by its estimated repair cost. If the outcome is under $5,000, you should probably repair. If over $5,000, you should replace.

See What Your Neighbors Are Saying About Ward!
We had a new HVAC installed in Whittier, NC on June 2nd and 3rd 2025.
Brian and Caleb did a wonderful job. Brian and Caleb gave us an overview of what they were doing and were very courteous and professional, we hardly knew they were in the house. They were so patient with our little barking dog too. We are Extremely pleased with their work.
Ward arranged for the electrical contractor, which did a terrific job and took the burden off of us arranging schedules, which greatly simplified the process for us.
From our first initial phone call and scheduling Jeremy out to give us a quote, to working with Nikki and Billy confirming an installation date that worked for us, with this being a vacation home, to the ladies answering the phones.
Great Service from all.
We highly recommend Ward Plumbing, Heating & Air.
Extremely happy with service Ward provided.
Don’t hesitate, call Ward.
First time was with Jeremy who fixed our toilet and flooring that was rotting.
Second time was today with Nicholas just double checking our toilet after we found a leak (turns out it was an isolated incident where our kids have bad aim). I did snap my fingers at him trying to shake his hand and that was incredibly rude of me, for that I am so sorry Nicholas 😭😭😭 I don’t know why I did that
But both pleasant experiences and 10/10 would recommend
Thanks
Update: Just had them out to replace my ancient Heat Pump. As always stellar service particular shout out to Dave, Luke Brian, and Caleb. They did awesome work answered all my questions (which were many) and even finished a little ahead of schedule. I absolutely would recommend Ward to anyone looking.
Jeff N was our AC tech today and he is extremely knowledgeable as well as personable. Love that he took the time to explain how the heat pumps work and what occurrences are normal vs an issue. I hope he stays with the company and continues in our area.
Daniel Mosely was so helpful, patient and informative in the evaluation of our plumbing needs. We are looking forward to his return to do the work so we will have peace of mind that things are in order.
Wards is easy to deal with for scheduling.
Thank you Ward!!!
